Connecting with Your Partner in Sacred Ways: Part 1

This post is one of a three-part series with tips to help you connect with your partner in sacred ways. Enjoy!

So often we are unbelievably busy with our day-to-day demands, media attention, stresses and outward preoccupation, that we may neglect the hidden aspects of our inner life or have trouble connecting with our partners in sacred ways.

Jim and I have been lifelong meditators and students of the world’s faith traditions. We delight in coaching you in useful and inspiring ways to deeply connect with your beloved.  Being a soulful couple is one of the richest rewards (along with having three amazing children) of our nearly 46-year marriage!

Ready to get started connecting with your love partner in sacred ways or to re-dedicate yourself? Here are some suggestions:

  1. couples_coffeeSet up a time to walk and talk, eat/drink and talk, or rest and talk to discuss what the words “sacred, spiritual and soulful” mean to each of you. Being able to be open about such sensitive and emotionally-laden topics brings intimacy beyond belief! Keep in mind this is an ongoing conversation that you can re-visit regularly.
  • Draw a mind map. Write a key word in the center, brainstorm with word bubbles around the center, connecting the ideas that are connected, or just toss out words freestyle.
  • You can each take a turn so you fully express yourself before your partner talks. Deepen your listening. Let the judgment and reactivity recede as you receive your lover’s heartfelt disclosure.
  • Notice what comes up for you regarding your spiritual self. What questions, concerns and challenges are you aware of?
  • Heal what may be blocking your open expression of the Divine. Learn to be a healing presence for each other and/or seek out a counselor, coach or clergy to assist you.

  • Carve out sacred time to rest and connect with your partner—hold each other and breathe together. Look into each other’s eyes and synchronize your breathing. Relax and open to the beauty of your love and respect for each other.
  • As you inhale, fill your heart with love for yourself, your partner and your life. Exhale and let out the stress you may be carrying. Let your shoulders drop and your face relax.
  • Once you feel connected and in sync, imagine a golden thread from your heart to your lover’s. As you breathe, the golden thread becomes brighter and more luminous. Allow the universal life force of love join you together throughout time and space.
  • Let your partner know how much you appreciate this sacred time together.
