Thanksgiving Introspection

happy-thanksgivingHappy Thanksgiving! We all have so much to be grateful for. Our lists are as abundant as the array of yumminess on our tables this Thursday. Saying “Thank you” and “I appreciate you” to those around us can feel so good. Breathing in the beauty and bounty nourishes our souls as well as our bodies. I invite you to take time to self-reflect and share with others from your heart.

In my self-reflection since the recent election, I am feeling unsettled and agitated. Because I stand for unity and collaboration, I want to avoid polarizing “us and them.” How can I be able to face the shadow elements in myself and in our society? Seeing swastikas and hate messages trigger me, and are too reminiscent of Nazi Germany, where many of my family members were burned in ovens. Never again! I am truly frightened, saddened, confused, called to action and downright angry.

Cultural and family change can be challenging and destabilizing. This can put undue stress on relationships or can be catalysts for growing closer to our loved ones. Today I came out of my meditation on fire, hurt and crying. I viewed internal images of my feminine energy being blocked by a huge forcefield in front of me and a big foot of masculine energy holding me down.

In the past I may have internalized the intensity of my feelings and been grouchy, then provoked a fight, etc. Today, I asked if Jim would listen to what is going on with me. He gave me his undivided attention and I cried in his arms. What a dear friend. After that, I read parts of my journal and found a reminder to “tap into all the resources around me for guidance and support.” I know all traditions have a message to assist us in navigating our path of personal and global transformation.

I turned to my Sufi teachings, especially this poem by Rumi, to reawaken my faith and trust in a greater good. I feel calmer reflecting on this perspective.

What gives you comfort, solace, strength and guidance? How can we join with others to serve the light and the dark of ourselves? Being in dialogue with my women friends and with other couples helps me process. What about you?

My prayers today: May we be grateful for the Guests that appear in our lives; for teachings of the light (what we desire) and the dark (what we fear); and of the balance of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine. May this be a time of  learning from our differences and unifying ourselves (within and around us). May we allow compassion and Love to heal. May we reach out to our loved ones for support and to express our gratitude. May we serve the community in ways that truly matter.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
